This book examines the complex, multidimensional phenomena of family violence, taking a unique approach to defining family.
We take special care to include the most up-to-date research available from different perspectives. We draw on the empirical findings from many different scholarly perspectives, including medicine and public health, law enforcement, law, social work, psychology, counseling, public policy, human development, religious studies, sociology, and veterinary science.
We balance theoretical perspectives with practical dimensions while documenting the struggles practitioners are faced with. Current debates in the field are highlighted. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of family violence and the challenges of the practitioner. Many of the chapters open with real stories of abuse or neglect, told from unique perspectives. Our intention is to point out the social impact that violence in the home has on victims, offenders, and the entire community.

The first two chapters provide an overview of the problem of family violence and the theoretical explanations for the prevalence of abuse and neglect. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the problem of violence in the home, framing definitions of family and family violence. We include a discussion of multidisciplinary perspectives and introduce some common themes that have been identified in abusive families.
