Over the years research has shown that getting kids involved in the kitchen, through cooking classes or at home, may make them more likely to choose healthy foods. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall community volunteers will host bi-monthly, hands-on cooking classes in COTS family shelters for the children and adults staying there. Each class will focus on a nutritious, in-season food that will be the main ingredient or feature prominently in a budget-friendly, healthy snack or main dish that the children will help prepare and enjoy as a group.
In addition to creating delicious and healthy treats gardening and cooking with kids also provides practical experience with many essential skills such as reading, following directions, and measuring.
